Join IABC Ottawa for a special conversation about ESG in the corporate and business space. As communications professionals we know that interest in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues has increased in recent years. As companies prioritize ESG, they are relying on their communications teams to bring awareness to these initiatives. You will learn about the management of ESG risk. This conversation will explore why ESG engagement matters in internal and external communications and also provide some considerations for creating ESG communications strategies that inspire action.

Who should attend: If you play a crucial leadership role in shaping your organization’s future by advocating for promising people, programs, and ideas that align with your organization’s direction. This event is part of IABC Ottawa’s Business Leader Chats series, which aims to bring together leaders and experienced pros in the industry to learn from an expert and have open, honest discussions. Speakers’ Bios

David Handelman, Manager Decarbonization Strategies

David Handelman has close to 20 years of experience working in the financial industry. Most recently, David has worked for TD Bank on ESG Policies and Issues, and helped lead the development of TD’s 2021 Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and Climate Action Report. He is currently working on TD Bank’s Financed Emissions targets. David is also currently studying part-time at the University of Edinburgh for a Master’s of Science degree in Carbon Management, working on his dissertation comparing Financed Emissions Target Metrics. He is also one of the founders and directors of a local tree planting organization in Canada’s National Capital region named Forêt Capitale Forest.

Moderator

Awelana Akeriwe, Associate Manager, Sustainability & Corporate Citizenship

Awelana Akeriwe, is an accomplished Communications Professional with over 15 years of experience. She holds a Masters in Professional Communications and has been a member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) since 2015.

Most recently, Awelana has worked for TD Bank in the Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship team driving colleague engagement and social impact in communities around us. She specializes in corporate event management and has extensive experience in the corporate and community space, creating meaningful events. She loves to use her project management and public relations skills to help businesses plan the production, branding, content and communications that are key to the success of their events. As an entrepreneur – she is the executive director and founder of Afrofusion Entertainment, launching a large-scale African music festival in her community that she ran for over 5 years.
